Finally matte batting helmets have come to Major League Baseball and I’m super excited. Back in 2006 (nine years ago), team Japan had matte finish batting helmets and every year since I desperately wanted to see them worn by MLB players.
They have a great subtle sheen. Glossy helmets are so obnoxiously shiny. Baseball is not a shiny, glossy sport. It has dirt, grass, leather, cloth, wood. None of those things are glossy so batting helmets should have that same earthy appearance. Plus ask any print designer what their preference is for paper finish and the answer most often will be uncoated over coated. Glossy finishes are just too schmiltzy.
Unfortunately the Cubs still wear glossy helmets. But the Pittsburgh Pirates are wearing black matte and it looks great!!
