jasper johns quote from Gray

“In 1950 or [19]51, a painter whom I admired said that he was to have an exhibition of eight or ten canvases which were turned face to the wall in the kitchen where we were talking. He said that the works were very new and good, and that he would not show them to anyone before the scheduled exhibition. When he left the room, another friend looked at the fronts of the canvases and found that they had not been painted.”

I don’t understand this quote. So these blank paintings were not Jasper Johns’s work? Whose work is it?
