I want that tattooed on my forehead though I suppose me doing that would be more postmodern than modern.

Call me crazy, but the issue here is a perceived lack of skill on the part of the artists who create these abstract pieces. Most people grew up associating “art” with the masters… DaVinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Van Gogh, Picasso, etc…

Those artists were creative and had exceptional talent which was demonstrated by creating artwork that most people had no hope of creating on their own. So now when people see “artwork” that looks like something they could produce themselves, they are extremely skeptical of the artist’s skill level and thus the piece is judged to be of low quality.
