Helvetica Neue is pronounced “noya”

Through my 12 years of being a professional designer, I always assumed that “Neue”, as in the fonts created by Linotype, was pronounced “new” because the German word “neu” is pronounced that way. And I assumed the second “e” was silent. But today I learned that “Neue” is pronounced “noya”. Go figure. I wonder what other font names I butcher on a regular basis.

When you discovered your mistake, I bet you felt like quite a “Heel”-Vetica. (Insert rimshot here)

I like the unexpected reference to Dustin Pedroia, however I would have expected a Francisco Goya reference instead. It’s a more similar word for rhyming and it has the added benefit of being an a famous artist.

After all, this blog has a heavy art and design focus.
