ok, so it shouldn’t be the only way to get your news, but it sure makes it fun.
phylotaxis.com is the site. There’s circle icons that dance around the screen like a lottery machine. Just click on one of the moving icons and a new screen will pop up with a large photograph, headline, and brief intro to article. Click on the photo and you’ll go to the original article.
There’s a “science culture” slider at the bottom if you prefer your news to be slanted towards one way more than the other.
What I really enjoy about this site is the large photograph that accompanies each article. Seeing a large chunk of text isn’t enough for me. I really like having that visual there to hold my hand and say that eveything’s going to be ok.
That is kind of a nice site. By forcing you to click on a timy image rather than a headline, you end up reading stories/articles that you might not ordinarily read. It takes you somewhat out of your comfort zone and exposes you to new things. For example, I clicked on an image and wound up getting an article about elephant contraception. I’m going to have to check out their blog. I just hope the topics aren’t based on the subject matter of their most recent magazines. I’m almost always 2-3 issues (months) behind in my reading.
