capital campaign
St. John Lutheran Church & School (freelance client)
St. John charted a groundbreaking 2.7 million dollar capital campaign drive in 2003 called "Love at Full Strength". It was lofty goal, but the campaign was a success thanks in part to the hard working communications committee that shared the church's message with its members. I was the graphics guy.
Included in this campaign were four newsletters, a large FAQ brochure, a brochure on giving ideas, an invitation mailer and poster for the Vision Awareness Event, an invitation for active members, devotion booklet, weekly bulletin inserts, letterhead/second sheet/envelope, commitment card, and of course a logo to tie everything together.
While developing concepts for the logo representing Love at Full Strength, it was very important to accurately symbolize 1 Peter 4:8-11 from which the campaign got its name.
There were three main factors kept in mind while designing the logo:
1. Strength: not only strength, but FULL strength. This logo had to be powerful.
2. Vulnerability: When you're putting all this love on the line, you become vulnerable. In addition to strength, it was necessary to communicate a sense of vulnerability.
3. Continuation: The gift of love is given to us from God and we are to share it with everyone. This action of continuous motion is important to convey in the logo.
Three items were sources of visual inspiration: the holy cross, stained glass windows, and 2x4" wood.
I began by "building" with 2x4s which convey might and power and also hint at Jesus' job as a carpenter. The 2x4s were arranged in a constant flowing spindle. This sense of motion implies the never-ending flow of love that God shares.
Next, the group of rotating 2x4s was duplicated and rotated and flipped and turned. More motion! More love flowing. So much in fact, that end result looks like a bustling explosion. The color palette exploded wide open as well to continue the idea of an animated love.
The color palette also takes its inspiration from the story of Joseph and the multi-colored coat. Through all of these bad and good times Joseph experienced in life, he ultimately learned to be happy where he was and be the best person he could be with what God gave him. He learned to trust and love God no matter what his circumstances were.
Another element was needed to show vulnerability. Transforming the 2x4s into glass-like structures enforced this concept. Each group of 2x4s was illustrated utilizing transparency. The wide range of colors is inspired from stained glass windows. The black outline was added to represent leaded glass.
Most importantly, the cross was placed at the center of this continuous love explosion. It is at the center inside the logo and at the center on the outside of the logo. Full strength love draws you in and moves you out. It is a constant act of motion.
This are my thoughts behind the logo. I feel that each person brings his or her own unique interpretation. By offering my vision, I hope to share with you a perspective you may not have seen before.
