artist's statement:
2x4 wood blocks and wood screws serve as the backbone to the wrapped block series. It is most importantly, a commentary on the functionality and practicality found in utilitarian objects such as 2x4s and wood screws. The images wrapped around the blocks are merely a means to express what the wood allows the artist to do.

The wood blocks and screws allow recognizable imagery to become distorted by itself. No outside elements or mediums are infused. The image alone (with the foundation of the 2x4) is reinterpreting itself through basic, yet unique folding techniques in varying levels of layers. The wood screws' function is to emphasize the nature of the 2x4 block. The screws are a constant reminder of the process used to create this Art.

The two-dimensional nature of the original image is taken into the third dimension resulting in fresh perspective on recognizable images. Some pieces take this notion a step further. The two-dimensional original image is a representation of a three-dimensional object.

So the order of the original object jumps through dimensions. The 3-dimensional object becomes 2-dimensional in the represented image. The image is then transformed into a 3-dimensional object as the 2-d image is wrapped around a block of wood.

The 2x4 is a quintessential American icon. It is one that has helped erect dreams and propel the human spirit. The wrapped block series is an attempt at an extension of that ingenuitive approach.
