Description of painting:
|
|
This original painting is from the series, "Lincoln's Contemporaries, Cartoon Style" which features portraits of figures who lived in the time of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War.
Ward Hill Lamon was born on January 6, 1828, in Frederick County, Virginia. He studied law in Louisville, Kentucky, and settled in Danville, Illinois at the age of 19. He was admitted to the bar a few years later. He traveled the eighth Judicial Circuit. He served for a time as a state's attorney and was Lincoln's associate in many Vermilion County cases. He was in an informal law partnership with Lincoln from 1852-1856.
He was great friends with Lincoln. He campaigned for Lincoln in the 1854 and 1858 Senate campaign, and the 1860 presidential election. He accompanied Lincoln on his inaugural journey to Washington and other journeys as Lincoln's bodyguard.
He later was the Marshal for the City of Washington and Chief of Protocol at White House events. On April 14, 1865, he was on assignment in Richmond. This meant that he could not accompany Lincoln to Ford's Theater, where Lincoln was assassinated. After the assassination he escorted Lincoln's body back to Springfield, Illinois. He held the post of marshal until June 1865, when he left to practice law in the firm of Hovey and Black.
He Wrote Life of Abraham Lincoln: From His Birth to His Inauguration as President in 1872. Lamon died on May 7, 1893, in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
