the reason behind the analog to digital tv switch

My brother and i were conserving on IM about how Congress is forcing everyone to switch from analog television signals to digital. Here’s the transcript:

spudart: HD DVD format is now dead. Blu-Ray is the official High-Def for DVDs
spudart: it’s about time seeing that tvs are all gonna have to go to hidef next year
yikesmoose: false
yikesmoose: tvs have to go to digital
yikesmoose: not hi-def
yikesmoose: they will turn off the analog signal
spudart: oh digital
spudart: not hi-def?

yikesmoose: correct
spudart: digital and hi-def is different?
spudart: whut?!
spudart: that’s dumb

yikesmoose: so if you have an analog tv hooked up to digital cable, then you are fine
spudart: fo real?
yikesmoose: for real
spudart: what about my 2-inch tv?
yikesmoose: trash
yikesmoose: good to watch static
yikesmoose: you know the reason they are giving the public for this switch?
yikesmoose: it makes me very angry
spudart: what?
spudart: you need to blog this, btw
yikesmoose: it’s something about how the government is saying that public services such as police and fire departments need ALL the analog airwaves. Supposedly televisions are taking up too much analog airwaves for public services to use their equipment. that’s such bull 5hit. If it truly was a concern, then the feds would have shut down analog tvs a long time ago. And Congress even extended the time frame for the analog tv shutdown. I seriously doubt that public services needs ALL this airspace. It’s all about lobbyists for tv manufacturers putting money into congressmen’s pockets to shut down analog tv.

I’m pretty sure the switch is to free up spectrum so it can be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Nothing to do with public services, although there are some conflicts with spectrum that is supposed to be “open” that is being used by certain public services still.

It’s a mess.

The best part? If you have bad reception for a channel, instead of seeing static you see digital artifacts. Parts of the image not refreshing, audio glitches, or just a blank screen for awhile.

It’s neat that you bolded my statements, because it highlights the questions and mistakes that many people would have about this transition

What exactly are you suggesting Randy? While I appreciate a healthy paranoia fueled by conspiracy theories and anti government rants, your post had no direction.

By the way, I am going to assume that you misspelled “dombing” intentionally in order to further your point that America and Canada are in fact less intelligent now than we used to be.

Regardless, please continue to post more amusing rants.

We should all help randy put an end to this “dombing”.. whatever the heck it is!

You have my support Randy!
