smart fortwo Car coming to USA

That’s right! The Smart car is coming to the United States. It’s a two-person car (no backseat) with incredible gas mileage (70.6+ mpg hway).

I saw these cars all over London in 2005. It’s about time they made it across the ocean to the United States. (The photo above was taken at Windsor Castle. Perhaps the Queen of England drives a Smart car.)

Expect the rollout of Smart Cars retail outlets to begin in mid-2007 and available to the public for purchase beginning in 2008. Get your very own 08 DaimlerChrysler smart fortwo Car! Apparently the name of the car will be “fortwo” by “smart”, thus “smart fortwo”. how clever.

“We believe the U.S. market will embrace the smart vehicle with its exceptional fuel economy, environmentally friendly features, and advantageous price point,” said UnitedAuto Chairman Roger Penske.

Since October 1998 the smart fortwo has attracted more than 750,000 customers in 36 countries.

check out the movies on their site to see the cute car in action: http://www.smartusa.com/
I love the footage of the smart car being parallel parked.

other than the video footage, the website is very boring. Smart better take a page out of the Mini book and market this car properly.

a long, but good summary of the smart fortwo here:

USA Today is saying the smart car will be priced under $15,000. It better be! There’s no back seat and no trunk. It should sell for 12 grand. The article also has a cool photo. If you have a mac, command (apple key) click on the photo to see it much larger.

and here’s a couple of sites that say the exact same thing:
