deepest man-made hole on earth

Here’s a bit of science knowlege for your summer weekend.

The deepest man-made hole on Earth.

The deepest hole drilled by man on Earth is located on the Kola Peninsula and is currently called “Kola Superdeep Borehole” (KSDB). It is east of Finland in Russia. It’s 12km north of the city, Zapolyarniy. Here’s an image of the drilling facilities. And here’s an image of the drill site.

The dig began in 1970 and the Soviet’s goal was to reach the “Mohorovičić discontinuity” or “Moho” which is where the crust and mantle intermingle. They never reached their goal and the hole currently is “only” 7 miles (12.262 km) deep. That’s 40,230 feet.

The previous record holder was the Bertha Rogers well in Oklahoma. It was a gas well and it stopped at 32,000 feet when it struck molten sulfur. stink-o. Most normal oil wells go 10,000 to 16,000 feet deep.

The purpose of the Kola Superdeep Borehole is not for oil/gas development or other monetary value. Its purpose is strictly for science. sweet. Digging really deep holes for the study of science began about 30 years. So far, 13 countries have drilled nearly 100 holes in continents across the globe, 20 of which are between four to five kilometers deep.

The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program is a “multinational program to further and fund Geosciences in the field of Continental Scientific Drilling”. Their website has a wealth of information. Though their projects page features some pretty ugly logos. C’mon, ICDP, shoot me an email and I’ll make some great logos for you!

This Flash animation shows how we have barely scratched the surface of the Earth with the Kola Superdeep Borehole. Be sure to hit the “play” button at the bottom of the illustration.

The Earth is about 41,851,378 feet in diameter and KSDB is only 40,229 feet. That’s about 1/10 of one percent. (0.001%). That’s sounds like the hole is too big. 1/10 of a percent seems really big when you think about the earth. My math can’t be right. Plus, the Kola Superdeep Borehole is a straight hole (more or less). The diameter takes into account the round shape our planet. says the earth’s diameter is 12,756.3 km. That converts to 41,851,378 feet.

You can email and telephone the project leaders of the Kola Superdeep Borehole. That’s mindboggling. You can talk to the people digging the deepest hole on Earth. I love the internet.

Were they trying to dig to China?

Very cool stuff. I want to stand over the hole and look down. Or maybe drop something in to watch it fall…

maybe the voices were speaking chinese, and they were just really close to completing their hole to get to China. The fools! So close!

A person starts digging from RUSSIA (north pole) and reaches GRAHAM LAND (south pole). When he will dig the last layer of earth what will happen to that person?

Will that person stand on earth with his head down ? That is, will he see the sky downward?

on the roof of a home there is mud layer (5 foot heigh) a person dig it, while digging he didnt come to know that he has reached roof and he continued digging. He fell down on the ground floor.
