ro-but or ro-bot?

How do you pronounce the word, "robot"?

I've always know to say "ro-bot". Two co-workers were discussing a riddle involving two robots and both of them have been saying, "ro-but" and it's been driving me absolutely crazy. They keep saying it over and over. "ro-but, ro-but, ro-but" Aargh! For the record, I corrected them and they still are saying "ro-but".

actually, that's your chicago accent coming through. You are actually saying "ro-b-ahhh-t."

I think the British pronounce it with a "but." I guess you didn't hear a lot of "ro-but" talk while you were there, though! Too bad. All nations should discuss robots regularly in public.

So it's "Your aughto baught is showing"? I still don't understand what it implies.

The quote came about after I sent a text message to a buddy. I got a reply, but it became clear that he didnt' type the reply, or that he had typed the reply and sends it as an auto-reply whenever he gets a text message. I likened the auto reply to something an autobot might send. I sent the text "your autobot is showing" (as in, I'm not feeling the love here, I'm feeling like I just got an auto reply with no thought towards my text) ... he typed back "LMAO!". Then I felt the love.

So it means "Your auto butt is showing." What's this about "aughto baught?"

Oh so "aughto baught" is just how you pronounce it. So wait, now you are asking me what an autobot is. It's the good guy transformers. But what i'm wondering is if there is some sort of hidden meaning in the "Your autobot is showing."

Well, admittedly I did borrow Autobot from Transformers to firmly plant my tongue in my cheek when I called out my buddy's impersonal reply. Only another Transformers fan might recognize that, but I was presuming that anyone might see "autobot" and know that, in general, it is a type of ro"bot" that "auto"matically responds when programmed or called upon to do so, particularly in situations where a human would generally respond but is too busy at that moment to do so. The response by the autobot should be seamless and not at all transparent. But when a response is required, the call to action or previous programming may have an error. Then the use of an autobot may be exposed and someone like me might call you out on it: "Your autobot is showing".

In honor of this post - I just said robut.
