This sign on the trail by my house always cracks me up. Just the idea of having this sign is funny. The sign states the obvious, "Trail flooded ahead" and then continues with further instruction, "Turn around". Then it just gets really freaked out and proclaims, "Don't drown".
It reminds me of many conversations in my house. I'll tell the kids something, then I have to qualify the obvious statement. That usually doesn't work so I have to give a concrete cause-and-effect scenario.
This reminds me of a pinback I found and bought at a gift shop in the Allegheny Mountains a couple hundered years ago. It had a cartoon fish on it that was expunging the advice: "Please don't drown it will spoil your day".
I was wondering if this was a *thing*, or if someone in your area wanted to make sure people REALLY REALLY didn't drown.
"Turn Around Don't Drown" or "TADD" is a NOAA National Weather Service campaign. (tadd.weather.gov)
It even has a song! http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/water/tadd/lyrics.shtml
There's also a video of the song on youtube... I'm not going to watch it while at work, and you might want to skip it too - in case it's horrible and you and up having it play in your head every time you see that sign.
That's also the first sign I've seen with a lock on it. In addition to camping in the Allegheny Mountains one of my favorite things to do before my brain was fully connected to my skull was stealing signs #gulp
The sign isn't really "locked", it's a conditional sign.
If the trail isn't flooded, the lock can be taken out and the sign folds down. The lock is then put through the lower loop so anyone passing by can't just put the sign "back up".
