Yesterday I mentioned how I was a fool to buy canvas at the fabric store instead of the art store. Though I did learn a great life lesson from a fabric store lady back in 94. It was the first time I went to a fabric store on the south side of the Chicago to beat the prices of the art store. (I bought cheap $1/yard muslin). She asked me what I was doing with the fabric. I told her I was an art student and I was taking a painting class, but I wasn't a painter. She replied very sternly and confidently, "If you paint, then you're a painter." That moment has stayed with me since.
at what point did you become a painter? when you had the realization when this lady told you this? Or was when you made your first painting prior to this? Basically, does it really take self-awareness to be what you do? Or once you do something, you automatically become that?
According to this lady's point, it is the latter--once you do something, you become that action. I am a commenter.
