best-looking sports uniform

It's been tough watching the Cubs lose the last two close games against the Detroit Tigers. Despite the outcome of the games, I really have enjoyed this series thus far for one simple reason. The Detroit Tigers have the best uniforms in all sports. Simply the very definition of classic.

Their home uniforms feature pure white tops and pants with the old english style dark blue "D" logo on the left chest and dark blue piping along the sides of the pants and around the collar running parallel down the center fronts matched by dark blue caps with the same old english "D" logo in white. That's it. Pure and simple. No other uniform past or present looks better.

Oh, and single digits work best on this pure uniform. It's too bad that three single digit numbers are already retired by the Tigers organization.

I do like the nice clean look, but I'm just not crazy about the old english style "D". If that were changed to something more agreeable, then I might agree with you.

Of course, there's also something to be said for the mascot logos on the uni's. I like the Indians unis when they have the picture of Chief Wahoo on them. Or the old Baltimore Oriole. I liked those old cartoonish logos. Didn't always like the color schemes that went with them, but the logos looked good on the unis.

whatever happened to that blog that wrote incessantly about uniforms every day. Each daily post would literally be about four pages long. I think maybe I just stopped checking the site. I forget the URL.

you bring up an interesting point about the hats, Mark. After I wrote this post I got to thinking about the repetition of the "D" from jersey to hat.

Throwing a logo onto a hat doesn't always work. The best hats are the ones with the simplest graphics. So, the Detroit "D" works and the Yankees "NY" works because they're so simple.

Putting the "C-u-b-s" logo (found on the home jersey) onto a hat looks stupid. It's really nice how the Cubs have a balanced look between the logo on the jersey and the logo on the hat.

I haven't made up my mind on how the Detroit "D" is repeated from jersey to hat. It is reversed out on the hat which is a subtle difference. Part of what makes the Tigers uniforms work is their dedication to simplicity. So having the repititon the "D" falls in line with that.

Cartoons on hats only work when the cartoon functions as well designed emblem. Chief Wahoo works very well and so does the happy Oriole dude. The swinging Padre doesn't really work on a a hat.
