best Christmas tree farm in Chicago area

Are you looking for the best Christmas tree farm in the Chicagoland area where you cut the tree down yourself? IDE Christmas Trees in Downers Grove is fantastic. I’ve been going there for about 8 years. There’s always a huge selection of trees with a solid range of types. I prefer the Douglas Firs.

You drive right up next to the trees, park you car and begin your search. It’s funny to see how many customers simply cut down the very first tree they see when they park their car. You can tell by the fresh tree stumps right next to the places to park.

There’s two lots to their property. Some people think the back lot is better, but I think those people like to think they’re keeping some kind of secret. There’s no one trying to haggle you to buy anything extra like wreaths or gnomes or junk. You simply find your tree. Cut it down. Carry to your car. Rope it down. Drive up to the booth right by the exit. Pay for your new, happy tree. Go home. Enjoy. The IDE Christmas Tree employees at the pay booth have always been very happy and friendly without being obnoxious. You feel real good leaving their lot after they wish you a happy Christmas.

It’s so refreshing to see a nice big tree farm smack dab in the middle of DuPage County. There’s a lot of civic pride surrounding IDE Trees. Come join the fun and get your next Christmas tree at IDE.

IDE Christmas trees does an excellent job of describing their service:

We are a real farm with live Christmas Trees growing on 35 acres of land located between Downers Grove, Darien and Woodridge. The Ide Family has been selling Christmas Trees for more than 50 years here. We have over 45,000 trees growing with several varieties of Spruce and Pine to choose from.

Our operation is simple. We have no helpers tagging along to offer their services to you for tips. Just bring the family. Park along the edge of one of our fields. Hike as much or little as it takes to find the “Perfect Tree” for your family. You cut the tree down. (we have saws available for a $5. deposit) You take the tree back to your car. (tree hauler wagons are available) You tie the tree to your car. (twine is available) You pay us as you drive out, and we wish you a Merry Christmas! That’s it! No gimmicks. No distractions. Just family time dedicated to preparation for the Holidays.

This year, 2009, it was $60 for any size tree.

Sounds nice, but I do like having that netting put around the tree. When the tree has been bundled like that, it is easier to transport and to get through doorways and into your house. Plus I’m willing to pay a couple bucks to have it secured to the roof of my car.

This post does make me nostalgic for the days when we had real trees though. Now we just have a fake tree and it’s just not the same. Granted, the fake tree is much easier and less time consuming, but you don’t get the same satisfaction.

Pricing the trees all at the same price actually encourages the smaller trees to grow. Which is nice.

Now do any of the trees grow so large that nobody wants them?

Do they have cedar trees because even though I don’t get a Christmas tree I’ve always wanted to have a Cedar Chrismas tree
